We had such a lovely old fashioned picnic on a recent trip out along the Dorset coast (on our way back from camping actually) that I thought it worthy of a post.

Having carted picnic blanket, food and drink with us we forgot to pack any activities but improvised with what we had around us.

1.  Who likes butter?

You just can’t beat the look of wonder on a 3 year old’s face as they concentrate on holding the buttercup still under your chin to see if your skin glows yellow and reveals whether you like butter or not.

2.  Daisy, daisy give me your answer do

Sometimes it’s nice to just sit still and enjoy a simple task with your child such as making a daisy chain.  The kids loved picking the daisies and making necklaces, bracelets and crowns for us all to wear.

3.  I challenge you to a dual

I hadn’t heard of this one but my husband used to play this when he was a child.  Grab a piece of plantain grass each and challenge your opponent to a dual.  The aim is to knock the head off your opponent’s piece of plantain grass while you are dualing.  Strangely satisfying and moreish game!

4. Here’s a tree in summer

Anyone remember this little rhyme?

Here’s a tree in summer

Here’s a tree in winter

Here’s a bunch of flowers

Here’s the April showers!

Here’s what you do – first pick a piece of grass with lots of juicy seeds at the top then:

1.  Here’s a tree in summer

(just hold up your piece of grass)

2.  Here’s a tree in winter

(pinch and slide your thumb and forefinger firmly along the grass and take all the seeds off as you go)

3.  Here’s a bunch of flowers

(hold up your bunch of flowers – the seeds you have between your thumb and forefinger)

4.  Here’s the April showers!

(throw the seeds up and over whoever is watching you.)

  1. Hello! This is lovely and really what childhood play is all about. I would love it if you would come and link it to our play-focused linky called “It’s Playtime” over on my blog! Thanks :-) (and lovely to discover another UK blogger)

Thanks for the feedback – lovely blog you have too – my kids love nothing more than mucking about with lotions, potions and mud in the garden. Have linked up as you suggested
